Meet District Commodore Alfred J. Verdi

Commodore Alfred J. Verdi assumed his current office as District Commodore for Auxiliary District Eleven, Southern Region, on January 1, 2013.

Commodore Verdi hails from Philadelphia, PA where his childhood boating experiences took place on the inland channels and bays around Atlantic City and on the Chesapeake Bay.  Commodore Verdi was on active duty with the U.S. Air Force from 1968-1972 and following his return from duty in the Republic of Vietnam in 1971 he settled in California where he has resided since.

He joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in 2004 as a member of Los Angeles Flotilla 12-04 in Marina Del Rey, CA. He has a variety of experiences in both elected and staff offices at all levels from flotilla to National. He is qualified as Boat Crew Coxswain, PATON Verifier, RBS Program Visitor, Vessel Examiner, Instructor, Telecommunications Operator, Communications Watchstander and Personal Watercraft Operator. He is also an AUXOP member.  He has been a Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) Inspector since 2007 and earned the Coast Guard EK qualification as Harbor Safety Officer.  He has served as Flotilla Commander and Division Commander and was District Chief of Staff from 2010 - 2012.  He has been on National Staff having served in the International Department as Branch Chief and then Division Chief of Oceania, New Zealand and Australia from 2008 to 2012. Coast Guard Awards include the 2008 COMO Charles S. Greanoff Inspirational Leadership Award.

He holds the following civilian qualifications:  FCC GROL, General Radio Operator License, with Ship Radar endorsement; Amateur Extra Class “ham” license, FAA Commercial, Instrument and Multiengine pilot ratings; Advanced Open Water SCUBA rating w/Enriched Air; Attorney, CA State Bar #101447, Real Estate Broker Lic. # 00782668.

From 1972 to 1996 Commodore Verdi worked for Magnavox Electronics Systems Company, Torrance, CA as a radio technician/engineer then as production test supervisor for the initial NAVSTAR GPS user equipment production for the US Air Force and also for the US Army DSCS SATCOM terminal programs 1972-1975.  He later became Magnavox director of contracts 1977-1981, then as Magnavox’s division counsel 1981-1996 and assistant secretary to parent North American Philips, N.A.  From 1996 to present he has enjoyed a private law practice concentrating in business and real estate litigation, bankruptcy, criminal law and government contracts.

Commodore Verdi enjoys fishing, boating, motorcycles, travel, and composing music.  He penned three compositions: “We Are One”, “Patriot Heart” and “Commodore’s Theme”, all of which have been recorded by the U.S. Coast Guard Band (http://www.uscgamdr.org/honorguard/colorguardaudio/index.html).
